Shockwave

Shockwave can be a bit of a misnomer when it comes to this modality. While the name indicates some sort of shock sensation when being used, it actually feels more like being tapped over and over again by a ball pen hammer!

Shockwave uses acoustic waves that lead to faster, as well as long-term healing and tissue regeneration. It can be used by both physiotherapists as well as chiropractors. The accusative wave carries high energy to the targeted tissue. There, it promotes regenerative and reparative processes.

Some of the processes include:

  • New blood vessel formation
  • Reversal of chronic inflammation
  • Stimulation of collagen production
  • Breakdown of calcifications
  • Decreased pain (via substance P dispersion)
  • Release of trigger points

Shockwave can be used for many diagnoses, including but not limited to rotator cuff injuries, calcific tendinosis, tennis/golfers elbow, heel spurs and plantar fasciitis.

While the treatment can be uncomfortable, it is not painful. Treatment can range from every 2 days to a week between treatments, depending on your condition and tolerance to the Shockwave therapy. Typically 8-10 treatments will be needed, however that may change depending on your specific needs.
