Helping You Find Relief & Comfort

Scoliosis is a sideways curve in your spine that is often detected in childhood or teenage years. The angle of the curve may vary, but anything more than 10 degrees is considered scoliosis.

If you suspect you have scoliosis, you may lean a little when you stand. Other symptoms include:

  • A visible curve in your back
  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • Ribs that stick out farther on one side of the body

Untreated scoliosis can lead to significant pain, stiffness, fatigue, and numbness from pinched nerves. It is important you have any signs or symptoms of scoliosis assessed so you can get the treatment you need.

When you visit Optimum Wellness Centres for a consultation, you will be met with friendly staff to check and make sure that all of your required information is on file. We will then have a no-obligation conversation about why you seek treatment and what you want to get out of it.

We use various tests, including X-rays and MRIs, to determine if you have scoliosis. We may also use physical exams to assess your spine and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

After thoroughly examining you, your doctor can make an accurate diagnosis of your scoliosis and its severity. Depending on your spine and your symptoms, they can work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan.

Treatment Options & Plans

Your treatment plan will depend on the symptoms you’re experiencing and the severity of your condition. Typically, your treatment will fall into 1 of 3 categories:

  • Observation
  • Nonsurgical options
  • Surgery

Observation involves monitoring your condition for any changes. This is usually for milder cases that may not get worse.

Nonsurgical options involve custom back braces to stop the progression of scoliosis as the body shifts and grows.

Surgical options are necessary when your scoliosis affects your lungs. The small bones in your spine will be fused to prevent the spine’s curve from worsening.

FAQs

If your scoliosis treatment involves a brace, your doctor will discuss the length of time you will likely need to wear it for. It depends solely on your condition and diagnosis.

Spinal fusion surgery involves a lengthy procedure that will likely include a week-long hospital stay. Following the surgery, recovery will usually require you to miss at least 3 to 4 weeks of school or work.

Staying active is important to your overall health, so please continue to exercise as you would regularly. Your doctor may advise you against any specific exercises that may hinder treatment.

We want our services to be accessible to all, so you do not need a doctor’s referral to access treatment.
