What Is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral nerves carry information between your brain and spinal cord and the rest of your body. When these nerves become damaged or irritated, the signals they send can be disrupted.

Neuropathy can affect people differently depending on the nerves involved and the underlying cause.

Common Symptoms May Include:

  • Numbness in the feet, legs, hands or arms
  • Tingling or a “pins and needles” sensation
  • Burning or shooting pain
  • Increased sensitivity to touch
  • Muscle weakness
  • Cramping
  • Balance or coordination difficulties
  • Changes in sensation
  • Difficulty walking or completing everyday activities

Symptoms can develop gradually or appear more suddenly. Because similar symptoms can have many different causes, proper assessment is an important first step.

What Causes Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy isn’t one single condition and can have many potential causes. These may include:

  • Diabetes
  • Certain medications or medical treatments
  • Injury or trauma
  • Nerve compression
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Certain infections
  • Excessive alcohol use
  • Kidney, liver or thyroid conditions
  • Other underlying medical conditions

In some cases, the cause of neuropathy may not be immediately known. If you are experiencing new or unexplained numbness, weakness, burning or tingling, it is important to speak with an appropriate healthcare professional to determine what may be causing your symptoms.

A Personalized Approach to Neuropathy Care

Our multi-modal approach uses therapies to reduce symptoms, improve nerve function and support your body’s natural healing process. Depending on your individual needs, your treatment plan may include:

A patient standing on a vibration plate, supported by a clinician

Vibration Plate

Whole-body vibration platform that produces rapid muscle contractions, used with the goal of supporting circulation, balance and neuromuscular activity.

A clinician administering laser therapy to a patient's foot

Laser Therapy

Therapeutic laser applied to the treatment area to reduce pain and inflammation, improve circulation and accelerate tissue healing.

A bio-mimetic electrical stimulation device with electrode pads

Bio-Mimetic Electrical Stimulation

Delivers electrical signals designed to mimic natural nerve activity and support nerve function and muscle re-education.

A photobiomodulation light therapy panel emitting red near-infrared light

Photobiomodulation (Light Therapy)

Applies specific wavelengths of near-infrared light to the treatment area, which supports circulation and the body’s natural healing processes.

A clinician using a Vibracussor percussive therapy device on a patient's leg

Vibracussor

Handheld percussive therapy device applied to the treatment area, which can support circulation and provide sensory input to the nerves.

A chiropractor performing a spinal adjustment on a patient

Chiropractic

Spinal and extremity adjustments support nerve function and overall body mechanics, as part of a broader treatment plan.

Your recommended treatment will depend on your individual assessment. When necessary, we may also recommend that you speak with your family doctor or another healthcare provider for further medical investigation.
