Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old technique based on traditional Chinese medicine that works to stimulate the balance and flow of Qi (pronounced chee) energy in the body. It’s thought that when the body is healthy, Qi flows freely through its conceptual pathways. When the balance or flow of Qi is obstructed, the body becomes more susceptible to disease and illness.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective alternative to medication that can treat both the symptoms and causes of a patient’s illness. Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain-relieving neurohormones) through the insertion of superfine needles into specific body points to encourage natural healing.
When you visit Optimum Wellness Centres for a consultation, you will be met with friendly staff to check and make sure that all of your required information is on file. We will then have a no-obligation conversation about why you seek treatment and what you want to get out of it.
Your health history and lifestyle will then be discussed to pinpoint the underlying cause for your pain or discomfort.
Your acupuncturist will discuss your pain points with you to identify where you will benefit most from treatment. They will then thoroughly explain the process and answer any questions you may have.
After the initial discussion, your acupuncturist can best diagnose the cause of your pain and begin developing a treatment plan to relieve symptoms. They may also recommend additional therapies, such as Chinese herbs.
During treatment, your acupuncturist will have you lie on your back, side, or front, depending on where the needles need to be inserted. They will use sterile, single-use, disposable needles. You may experience a brief stinging or tingling sensation as they’re inserted.
After the needles are inserted, you may feel a dull ache at each insertion site that typically subsides. Most patients report acupuncture as being relatively painless.
The number of treatments needed will depend solely on your unique needs. For example, a patient with a severe chronic condition may need several sessions over several months, whereas a mild ailment may only need a few treatments.
There is a wide range of disorders and conditions that acupuncture has been proven to help. Some of the most common include:
In 2003, the World Health Organization listed several additional conditions where acupuncture has been proven effective. You can view them here.
Acupuncture is an age-old style of treating pain and illness proven to be effective in many different ways. When performed correctly, acupuncture is very safe and has few side effects. Additionally, acupuncture can be used in tandem with other treatments and may help individuals who are unable to take pain medication.
Acupuncture is meant to be accessible to all who may need it, so you do not need a doctor’s referral to access treatment.
I was referred by a friend to Jency Henry Physiotherapist at Macleod trail Optimum for my back pain. She is amazing, she knows what she is doing. She was explaining during the assessment and treatment session about what are my issues and what needs to be treated or taken care. I was very satisfied about her approach in treating my pain. I came to understand about my body better like my weakness and tightness. I feel very light as if most of my weight has been off from my back after my session.
Just have to thank Dr. Nina!!! The chiropractic care I receive is outstanding and with such precision and creativity! I have an autoimmune condition called Scleroderma which causes extreme mis-alignment and muscle/joint pain. After an adjustment I feel amazing and helps me to cope with the symtoms so I don’t have to take pharmaceuticals that often. Also, I notice my low blood pressure is back to normal since I have been seeing Dr. Nina. I am so relieved I can start up my adjustments again. I have referred my nieces, my sister, and my friend and they all are of the same opinion!! Dr. Nina is my Chiropractor for life!!!
I highly recommend Nicole, I had my first massage with her today and it was very relaxing and took a lot of the stress out of my body from the last few months. I felt very comfortable with Nicole, she is easy going, respectful and professional. It was just the perfect combination of touch and light conversation at the right time. I will most definitely be going back to Nicole in the future.
Made the mistake of going to another provider based on them open on Saturday, what a mistake. Minimal relieve and care. I returned to Dr. Jamie Mulholland in Airdrie and what a difference. Hips line up, pain on standing gone, not hunched over due to lower and upper back pain, headaches relieve in the first visit back to Dr. Jamie. Won’t venture away again.
Realiza of Sunridge location is highly recommended for her massage skills. She takes time to understand client’s concern and offers an effective approach to address them.
I’ve been a patient of Dr. Jackie Fairbourn for over 8 years and I highly recommend her as an amazingly gifted healing facilitator. She continues to impress me with her openness to adding gentle healing approaches to her extensive chiropractic skill set. Lately I have particularly enjoyed the tension-relieving benefits resulting from receiving Body Code, Emotional Code and now, Network Care. I appreciate her calm, informed and intuitive healing support.
