Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy for Women

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that acts like a sling or hammock for the uterus, colon, and bladder. For some people (primarily women), the pelvic floor can become weak or damaged due to age, trauma, or post-pregnancy. Without a strong pelvic floor, simple daily tasks like bladder control can become difficult.

At Optimum Wellness, we provide a range of support services for pelvic floor issues and other issues frequently associated with women’s health, including:

Please visit us for a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

When you visit Optimum Wellness for a consultation, you will be met with friendly staff to check and make sure that any of your required information is on file. We will then have a no-obligation conversation about why you seek treatment and what you want to get out of it.

Your health history and lifestyle will then be discussed to pinpoint the source of your symptoms. We may perform some light testing to evaluate the health of your pelvic floor.

Once we have thoroughly discussed your health history with you, we may need to perform some gentle testing to evaluate the health of your pelvic floor muscles. We will discuss all tests with you beforehand, so you know what to expect.

Treatment Options & Plans

Once we have a more complete understanding of your pelvic floor health, our team will develop a custom treatment plan to address your needs. Your plan with be tailored to help you reach your goals. However, it will most likely include in-office treatments and at-home exercises to improve your strength.

FAQs

Symptoms of pelvic floor problems can include:

  • Frequently feeling the need to urinate
  • Painful urination
  • Unexplained back pain
  • Consistent pain around your rectum, genitals, or pelvic
  • Incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Pain during sex
  • Perineal tear

An internal exam will allow us to develop a thorough understanding of your needs. However, not every patient requires an internal exam. During your consultation, we can discuss the necessity of an internal exam and what it might entail.

Your comfort and safety are paramount. We will never ask you to do anything you are uncomfortable with, nor will we pressure you to have tests you don’t want.

Your physiotherapist will walk you through exactly what the process is. An internal exam will only be conducted if you feel comfortable. If you do feel comfortable, your physiotherapist will talk you through the exam and explain what is being done while it’s happening.

The time required for treatment varies based on the severity of your concerns and the frequency with which you perform your exercises. Your physiotherapist will give you an estimated timeline.

At this time, we only provide pelvic floor therapy to patients who were assigned female at birth.

Pelvic floor physiotherapists use a combination of approaches such as:

  • Strengthening exercises
  • Connective tissue technique
  • Manual therapy
  • Behavioural techniques
  • Bladder & bowel retraining
