Our psychologists can help you learn to cope more effectively with life issues and mental health conditions. Your physical, mental, and emotional well-being are closely related. Sometimes, certain challenges can result in feeling depressed, anxious, or discouraged.

When you visit Optimum Wellness Centres for a consultation, you will be met with friendly staff to check and make sure that all of your required information is on file. We will then have a no-obligation conversation about why you seek treatment and what you want to get out of it.

We will discuss your health and lifestyle and ask questions about your personal history to gather an understanding of your need for support. The information we discuss can involve a myriad of things, including your marital status, interpersonal relationships, experiences growing up, work history, and any involvement with drugs or alcohol.

After an initial conversation, your psychologist may use several tests to understand how you think or feel. Before beginning any tests, your psychologist will explain the purpose of each and what it is used to assess. Some tests may involve memory or concentration; others may be used to better understand your personality characteristics.

These tests will help your psychologist arrive at a more accurate understanding of your diagnosis to develop the best treatment plan for you.

Treatment Options & Plans

Your psychologist will review your test results and discuss with you what they recommend in terms of treatments. You will be given the opportunity to ask any questions and provide your valuable input. Treatment depends solely on your unique characteristics and needs.

Common types of treatments include:

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy
  • Interpersonal therapy
  • Systems therapy

Your treatment plan could involve you as an individual, or be structured in a couple, group, or family format.

How long you will need psychological support depends on your situation and needs. Some individuals show improvement after a few sessions, where others may need to visit their psychologist for several months or even years for substantial growth and healing.

Your psychologist will discuss your perspective length of treatment with you based on the nature of your problem, the severity of the problem, and your goals.

How often you see your psychologist will depend on your treatment plan, financial abilities, and schedule. Your psychologist will work with you to find a program that works best for you.

In Canada, the information you disclose to your psychologist is confidential and can not be shared without your express permission. Your psychologist will discuss the “limits of confidentiality” with you before starting your treatment.

Limits of confidentiality involve when and why it is necessary to share your personal information with authorities or governing bodies. This means your information may be shared if your psychologist suspects harm may come to you or someone else, a child is being abused or neglected, or another health care practitioner has abused a patient somehow.

Courts also have the power to subpoena a psychologist’s files at any time.

Psychology is meant to be accessible to all who may need it, so you do not need a doctor’s referral to access treatment.
