Calgary Fertility Acupuncture FAQs
What is fertility acupuncture?
Fertility acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) designed to support reproductive health. It involves inserting fine needles at specific points on the body to balance hormones, enhance blood flow, reduce stress, and promote fertility naturally or in conjunction with assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like IVF and IUI.
How can acupuncture improve fertility?
Acupuncture may help fertility in several ways:
- Regulates menstrual cycles and hormonal balance
- Increases blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
- Reduces stress and supports emotional wellbeing
- Improves ovarian function and egg quality
- Enhances sperm quality and motility
- Supports implantation and reduces miscarriage risk
Is there scientific evidence supporting fertility acupuncture?
Yes, while results vary, several studies suggest acupuncture can increase pregnancy rates, especially when combined with IVF. It’s considered a complementary therapy that helps prepare the body for conception and improves the outcomes of conventional treatments.
When should I start acupuncture if I’m trying to conceive?
For best results, it’s recommended to begin acupuncture 3–6 months before attempting to conceive—whether naturally or through ART. However, benefits can still be seen when starting at any point in the process.
How often should I come for treatments?
Treatment frequency is personalized, but typically:
- 1–2 sessions per week is recommended
- For IVF patients: treatments may be timed with stimulation, retrieval, and embryo transfer
- For natural cycles: acupuncture is often tailored to different phases of the menstrual cycle
Is fertility acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Absolutely. When performed by a licensed and experienced practitioner, acupuncture is very safe throughout the fertility journey—including pregnancy. Certain acupuncture points are avoided in early pregnancy for safety.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin—most patients feel little to no discomfort. You may experience a slight tingling, warmth, or heaviness at the needle site, which is normal and typically a sign the treatment is working.
Can acupuncture help with male infertility?
Yes. Acupuncture is also used to support male fertility by improving:
- Sperm count and motility
- Sperm morphology
- Testosterone levels and overall reproductive health
- Stress and emotional wellbeing
Can acupuncture help with conditions like PCOS or endometriosis?
Yes. Acupuncture is frequently used to manage:
- PCOS: supports regular ovulation and hormonal balance
- Endometriosis: helps reduce inflammation, pain, and support implantation
Both conditions can impact fertility, and acupuncture may improve your chances of conceiving naturally or with assistance.
Are there any side effects with fertility acupuncture?
Side effects are minimal. Some people may experience:
- Mild bruising or tenderness at the needle site
- Temporary lightheadedness
- Fatigue or increased relaxation
All are short-lived and generally very mild.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Jackie Fairbourn for over 8 years and I highly recommend her as an amazingly gifted healing facilitator. She continues to impress me with her openness to adding gentle healing approaches to her extensive chiropractic skill set. Lately I have particularly enjoyed the tension-relieving benefits resulting from receiving Body Code, Emotional Code and now, Network Care. I appreciate her calm, informed and intuitive healing support.

I was referred by a friend to Jency Henry Physiotherapist at Macleod trail Optimum for my back pain. She is amazing, she knows what she is doing. She was explaining during the assessment and treatment session about what are my issues and what needs to be treated or taken care. I was very satisfied about her approach in treating my pain. I came to understand about my body better like my weakness and tightness. I feel very light as if most of my weight has been off from my back after my session.

Just have to thank Dr. Nina!!! The chiropractic care I receive is outstanding and with such precision and creativity! I have an autoimmune condition called Scleroderma which causes extreme mis-alignment and muscle/joint pain. After an adjustment I feel amazing and helps me to cope with the symtoms so I don’t have to take pharmaceuticals that often. Also, I notice my low blood pressure is back to normal since I have been seeing Dr. Nina. I am so relieved I can start up my adjustments again. I have referred my nieces, my sister, and my friend and they all are of the same opinion!! Dr. Nina is my Chiropractor for life!!!

I highly recommend Nicole, I had my first massage with her today and it was very relaxing and took a lot of the stress out of my body from the last few months. I felt very comfortable with Nicole, she is easy going, respectful and professional. It was just the perfect combination of touch and light conversation at the right time. I will most definitely be going back to Nicole in the future.

Made the mistake of going to another provider based on them open on Saturday, what a mistake. Minimal relieve and care. I returned to Dr. Jamie Mulholland in Airdrie and what a difference. Hips line up, pain on standing gone, not hunched over due to lower and upper back pain, headaches relieve in the first visit back to Dr. Jamie. Won’t venture away again.
